Other Books of Interest

Blyth, R. H.  Haiku (4 volumes)

Blyth’s groundbreaking consideration of the history of haiku and its relation to Eastern thought (especially Zen Buddhism) remains a classic work.  While some readers have been captivated by Blyth’s reflections on spirituality and life, others admire this work for its hundred of translations of Japanese haiku that are impossible to find elsewhere.

Gurga, Lee.  Haiku:  A Poet’s Guide.

This book is the best recent introduction to the haiku.  Written by the current editor of Modern Haiku, it contains lengthy discussions on how to write and revise haiku, on haiku form and theory, and on related types of poetry.  Highly recommended for beginners.

Henderson, Harold. G.  An Introduction to Haiku.

Along with Blyth’s work, this book remains the classic introduction to the form. Written by the founder of the Haiku Society of America, Henderson takes a brisk yet informative look at the history of Japanese haiku before speculating about the forms that American haiku may take.

Higginson, William.  Haiku World:  An International Poetry Almanac.

This book is an introduction to kigo, or season words, and their role in haiku. Higginson lists the plants, animals, heavenly phenomena, and events that are associated with each season, together with examples of haiku that use these kigo to fair or good effect.

Kacian, Jim (chief editor).  The Red Moon Anthologies.

Each year, Jim Kacian and ten other editors comb through all the haiku that have been published to compile this anthology.  Each volume contains many excellent haiku, senryu, haibun, and essays on the form, giving poets a handy summary of the year in haiku.

Ross, Bruce (editor).  Haiku Moment: An Anthology of Contemporary North American Haiku

This is an outstanding collection of haiku, plus contains a superb introduction to the haiku form written by the editor, Bruce Ross.

Ueda, Makoto.  Bashō and his Interpreters.

For anyone wishing to learn about the history and glory of haiku, this book is necessary reading.  The volume contains translations of 255 haiku by Japan’s greatest haiku poet by a leading Japanese scholar, presented with comments by Japanese critics that illuminate the themes, language, and importance of each poem.

van den Heuvel, Cor.  The Haiku Anthology:  Haiku and Senryu in English (3rd ed.)

Cor van den Heuvel’s anthology of English-language haiku is generally regarded as being the best available.  Since each poet is represented by a fair number of haiku, the reader can gain a sense of the voices and themes of leading haiku poets writing in English.

Williams, Paul OThe Nick of Time:  Essays on Haiku Aesthetics.

Paul O. Williams is one of the most important critical voices in the American haiku movement, and this collection of essays shows him considering such questions as haiku language, the role of metaphor, and the limits of haiku form with modesty and intelligence.
