Meeting news
(updated Aug 7th)
We will not be
holding an autumn meeting as everyone is invited (and urged) to attend
Haiku North America (September 21 - 25), held this year in
Port Townsend,
Washington (on the Olympic Peninsula) More
details below.
Haiku North America
Save the date -- the Haiku North America
conference is coming to the Pacific Northwest on
September 21st- 25th, 2005.
Plan now to come to this stimulating and informative celebration of
haiku in Port Townsend, Washington. Haiku North America is a biennial
conference devoted to haiku and related genres of poetry. The event was
founded in 1991 in California, and two of its founders, Garry Gay and
Michael Dylan Welch, continue as its directors.
HNA is independent of all haiku organizations, and
seeks to be a gathering of the tribes, an event that welcomes all
perspectives on haiku, all haiku groups, and all haiku poets whether
they are members of a haiku group or not. The event has most often been
held in the summer, and includes four days of presentations, papers,
workshops, readings, and other activities of interest to beginning and
experienced haiku poets alike, as well as scholars and translators. Past
speakers have included William Higginson, James Hackett, Jane Hirshfield,
Haruo Shirane, Hiroaki Sato, Sam Hamill, and many others representing
the leading haiku writers, translators, critics, and scholars of
English-language haiku. While its focus is on haiku in North America,
the event welcomes participants from all over the world. Haiku North
America conferences have taken place in the San Francisco area in 1991
and 1993, in Toronto in 1995, in Portland, Oregon, in 1997, in the
Chicago area in 1999, in Boston in 2001, and New York City in 2003. As
many as 150 to 200 people have attended, and the conference is a
cornerstone event for all North American haiku poets. For 2005, the
festivities will take place in Port Townsend, Washington, through
Centrum at Fort Worden. The event is planned
for early October of 2005, but the exact dates have not yet been set.
More information will be offered as soon as it is available. For more
information, please contact Michael Dylan Welch at
WelchM@aol.com.
Note: Haiku North
America has no formal connection with the Haiku Society of America or
any other organization. HNA is sometimes confused as being an HSA event,
but this has never been the case.
